Weekend Report, August 12, 2013

Neill Blomkamp's much anticipated follow-up to 2009's District 9, Elysium, does not appear to be poised to change the world, but it had a fair start, all things considered. Treading similar territory to District 9, but this time with more movie stars and fewer bug-like aliens, the film managed a first place finish, while four other new releases cracked the top five. We're the Millers came in second for the weekend, but made an impressive showing nonetheless, capitalizing on a dirth of broad comedies this summer. You could argue that Planes and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters were disappointments, but the August release suggests expectations may not have been sky-high to begin with.
