Weekend Box Office Report - 12-11-2017

Pixar’s Coco won the weekend for the third time in a row with $18.6 million. Giving it the #1 spot for Disney for three straight weeks, which was a feet last years Moana also did before the release of last year’s Star Wars movie Rogue One. The only other wide release was Broad Green’s Just Getting Started pretty much stopped at $3.18 million and the bottom of the top 10 at number 10 which I’m sure CAA won’t be happy about as they rep writer/director Ron Shelton and stars Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones.

The rest of the top five was largely the same EXCEPT for The Disaster Artist which expanded to more markets and made $6.4 million knocking Thor: Ragnarok down to fifth place. UTA will happy with client James Franco, while WME reps Dave Franco. But Anonymous Content will be happy as they rep both Franco brothers.

Justice League is still hanging on by its fingernails in second place with $9.6 million, bringing its total cume up to $212 million domestically. What will be interesting going forward is seeing how Warner Brothers handles its DC properties.

In third place, again, Wonder came in with $8.45 million. While Thor: Ragnarok hit number five with $6.29 million.

Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird earned $3.5 million landing in the number 9 spot.

The Shape of Water expanded to more markets and made $1.1 million which puts it just outside the top 10, and will likely crack the list as it continues to expand and awards season heats up. Another awards contender, I,Tonya opened in limited release in just four theaters and earned $245,602 will expand in 2018, not bad for a small movie, which is good news for UTA who reps director Craig Gillespie, Gersh who reps writer Steven Rogers and co-star Allison Janney, and CAA will be happy as they rep star Margot Robbie.

Next week: Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens and is tracking to make $200 million domestically (which will make it the fourth film to do that). Which will be good news for CAA who reps writer/director Rian Johnson and star Daisy Ridley. The only other wide release in a bit of counter programming is Fox’s Ferdinand. This blogger will be off for the holidays, but we’ll cover all the holiday box office when we return in 2018!
